Asking for suggestions on presenting EVE to the masses

By fholcan

All this week a group I’m part of in my college (we’re the geeks and nerds) is hosting a games expo. We have card games, board games, miniature games (Warhammer 40K anyone?), and of course, computer games.

Next Friday the topic is going to be online games and since I’m the only one of the group that plays EVE (yes, the I’m trying hard to convert them), it falls to me to present it to the masses. What I’m asking for is sugestions on how to do it. I’m a full-on miner, so I don’t have any flashy combat ships to show the folks :P

How would you guys go about presenting EVE to people who don’t even know it exists?

Ambulation is a good start, perhaps an ad campaign on a different medium (such as TV). Honestly though, the nature of EVE would probably scare away a lot of people… and perhaps that’s a good thing.

The player driven economy and player controlled space aspects with well developed PVP are what caught my eye. The depth and complexity are what have convinced me to stay.

    I couldn’t even imagine trying.

EVE Blogs are a good place to start, if not for all the incredible YARRR propaganda I have filtered to me throughout the workplace via Google Reader I’d have probably even called it quits long ago.

I think it was the fact that I could do whatever I want, the fact that I have the potential to make the game entirely my own. To not just create my own character class, to BE my own character class. Also the fact that theres no grind, and I can “play” this game while playing others.

I sort of jumped the gun with that last paragraph, those are the things that made me want to play to begin with…

But I sort of suspect theres an amount of MMO Maturity that has to exist in order to play EVE. I’m jaded to TONS OF PEOPLE 1 GAME, having played Ultima since way back in the day. I’m jaded to BIG MASSIVE WORLD THAT I CAN WALK IN!!! OR EVEN FISH IN!!! Having played EQ around 99-00. I’m jaded to OMG I HAVE GUNS I CAN SHOOT! Having played Anarchy Online around 01-02.

I can’t stand the grind, and the second I got a taste of that in WOW I knew it was already over. I KNOW that I’m never going to be the guy who plays a game for years on end grinding out to the highest levels. That is a feat I’ve never achieved in all my years of MMO gaming.

That’s another great thing about EVE – EVE HAS bored me at times with the rate of advancement. What’s kept me hooked longe rthan any other game is that I can take a break from it and continue to advance. THAT’S Awesome.

    ok longwinded I know, sorry

Show them some of the CCP trailers that show actual ships instead of conceptual art. Or show them this one:

There are tons of videos out there. I seem to remember a couple of mining boats fitted for combat that fared well. You can prob seach ‘hulk’ ‘eve online’ on youtube or in forums to find them.

wow, putting this much effort into a game, you should actually work at a real life mine…sounds like you’d do a pretty good job in the engieering or planning department. maybe even geology with all the ore you talk about.

(I’m a geologist at a gold mine, stumbled on this site by accident)

    Keep on mining

Myself, i would open with the market of eve and how it’s probably one of the only game that has a market comparable to real life, with supply and demand, and even a real market analyst. That should get you the attention of anyone working marketing or any related field.

I’d talk about how Eve runs on a single shard, and that there is both protected space, with concord, and how the nullsec system are up for the taking. How big alliances, made of multiple corporations, battle for that space with intellienge and couter-intelligence. How diplomacy is a huge part of this game and how macro management of corps and individuals make up a huge part of an alliance success. That should get you the attention of anyone working law or working towards policits.

And i would end with some videos of pvp, not actual game videos, but some of the machinima that i’ve seen over the years. that last one should get you the attention of anyone nursing a hangover. Bright and shinny colors do that to me on a hangover morning.

    Anyways, that’s my 2cents.
