Habit

By fholcan

Habit can be a dangerous thing. When you’ve done the same thing over and over again, you stop thinking about it. After all, things have always been like this, they could never be different, so why bother thinking about them? The danger lies exactly in that, because when things change, you don’t notice them and that can be fatal, especially in EVE.

When I was can flipped, I was appalled. That had never happened before, and I’ve been mining for a long time, since I first started playing this game. Because not being stolen from had become a habit, I was not ready for when things changed. Stagnation is death. So I had to change.

I went with choice number 2, Rigs. I got my Hulk some Cargohold Optimization I rigs, which gave me a 15% cargohold bonus each. That in itself was pretty good. But thanks to yomma’s excellent suggestion, I started using some GSCs in my cargo hold. Incredible devices that use the 4th dimension to it’s fullest, these containers actually have more space inside them (3900 m3) than the space they take up (3000 m3). Ah, the marvels of science.

The rigs and the GSCs combined allow my Hulk to ferry some 20K (give or take) m3 of ore, not quite a jetcan in itself, but pretty impressive none the less. Cargo mining has become my new way of mining. I have changed.

This change, combined with the startling discovery that I had been, for the past 2 weeks, mining the wrong ore, has really livened up my mining hours, so I guess getting robbed was the best that could have happened to me :D

Nice cargohold on that Hulk. Maybe I should get some rigs too? It’s just that I’m such a cheapskate at times. :)

Anyway, what I wanted to ask was: what ore have you been mining if it was the “wrong” one?

I expressed myself incorrectly. There is no such thing as a “wrong” ore, as long as you are mining something, it’s all good :D

What I meant was that I wasn’t mining the most efficient ore, ISK/m3 wise. I had assumed that it was Pyroxeres when actually it was Scordite. I know this seems weird, but there are calculators out there (Grismar’s EVE Wiki comes to mind) that will make it clear. However, I recommend you run the numbers yourself, I had to in order to convince myself, I just couldn’t believe other people’s math :P

Yeah, those numbers fluctuate. This week I was told that the most valuable ore to mine atm is Dense Veldspar. I have trouble believing that, even tho the trit prices right now are pretty darn high :)

I’ll check out Grismar’s EVE Wiki at my earliest convenince, check out them calculators. Thanks a lot :)

Keep an eye on your armor amount. Two of those rigs on a base Hulk drop the armor from 1013 to 821. Might want to beef up your tank accordingly; losing that big Hulk to rats would suck mightily.

When she’s mining in her Hulk, Lexx doesn’t usually worry about what ores are “most valuable”; she just chews up the entire belt. :-)

Glad you liked my suggestion! Also thanks for your comment over at my blog, most appreciated!

Good to see you’ve got something good going on there! 20k is awesome for solo!

Too often we forget some basic principles as we become “Veterans”. To look at things with a fresh eye, with the eyes of a newbie, is often to gain an edge.

Never take things for granted or as they were. Rules change, patches get applied and next thing you know, you’re following old habits that no longer apply.
